ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw versus #5 Stevens in Empire 8 action on Saturday afternoon. The tie moves RIT to 5-4-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the Empire 8. Stevens moves to 6-0-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Empire 8.
RIT enjoyed the better of the chances, out-shooting the Ducks 15-6. The Tigers took eight corner kicks to three for Stevens.
The Tigers defense played a strong game, allowing just six shots for the Ducks and only one that went on net. That came in the 86th minute. Steven's Christina Grapel got open inside the RIT penalty area and flicked a shot on net. RIT keeper
Sean Conway (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) dove to his left, making the save to keep the game scoreless.
RIT's first good scoring chance came in the 13th minute when junior
Dan Holowaty (Strongsville, OH/St. Ignatius) made a run down the right flank. He and
Mike Allocco (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills) played a nice one-two allowing Holowaty to cut into the box. He fired a shot that just missed the Stevens net.
Stevens first good scoring chance came in the 45th minute when Nolan Sandberg flicked a header off a long ball that just went wide of the RIT net.
In the 54th minute Holowaty and
Todd Gaulocher (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) worked the one-two opening Gaulocher up for a shot that just missed the target.
Holowaty had another chance in the 65th minute but his shot once again missed the target.
Stevens had the first good chance in overtime. Sandberg gobbled up a loose ball in the 99th minute. He made a strong run into the RIT penalty area. Just as he was abouot to fire a shot RIT's
Sean Coots (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City) got a toe on the ball and nudged Sandberg enough to thwart the chacne.
RIT's best chance in the overtime came int he 108th minute. Senior
Jake Yates (Waynesburg, PA/Waynesburg) fired in a cross off a free kick. It was swinging into the Stevens box and was punched away by Steven's keeper Zach Carr just in the knick of time.
Conway and RIT's defense played a strong game holding Stevens scoreless. The Ducks have yet to concede a goal in eight games this season.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Empire 8 rival Utica College. Kick-off at RIT Field is set for 1 pm.
