Women's basketball drains program record 11 3-pointers in route to win over Keuka

Tigers to play SUNY in Geneseo in Wendy's College Classic fifth-place game on Saturday.

ROCHESTER, NY –
The RIT women's basketball team (6-5), seeded sixth, set a program record by draining 11 3-pointers en route to a 77-60 win over No. 7 Keuka (5-4) in consolation round action of the 2010 Wendy's College Classic hosted by the University of Rochester on Thursday afternoon.

The 11 made 3-pointers smashed the previous mark of nine, set on two occasions. Sophomore #Anne Wapshare (Blasdell, NY/Immaculata Academy) was 5-for-6 from behind the arc en route to a team-high 16 points. Senior (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius)Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport)# scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. She also added a game high seven assists.

Keuka scored the first four points of the second half, but the Tigers used an 8-0 run to up its lead to 12, 39-27 with 17 minutes left. Keuka made a small charge to cut the RIT lead to nine, 42-33, then the Tigers went on a 15-7 charge to up the lead to 17, 57-40, on a 3-pointer by #Brianna O'Dell (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenedehowa)#. O'Dell chipped in with eight second half points.

Sophomore center #Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# was held to just six points and six rebounds, but blocked seven shots, giving her 48 for the season. #Jasmine Maisonet (Baldwin, NY/Sacred Heart Academy)# scored seven points, while #Shannon Bean (Manchester, ME/Maranacook Community)# added six points for RIT.

Nadia Madmoune led all players with 17 points, and eight boards for Keuka. Melissa Thurston added 11 points, seven boards, and six steals, while Jessica Fink added 10 points for the Storm.

RIT shot 62 percent from the field (16-for-26) in the second half and shot 54 percent (28-for-52) overall. RIT held Keuka to 43 percent shooting and forced 25 turnovers.

Keuka won the battle of the boards, 34-27. The Storm pulled down 17 offensive rebounds.

RIT opened the game on an 18-5 run over the first nine minutes of the game and never trailed, leading by as much as 15, 30-15 late in the first half. Keuka ended the half on an 8-1 run.

Wapshare and freshman guard #Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# came out gunning in the first half, both a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. Wapshare drilled three 3-pointers en route to 10 points, while Havens scored seven of her nine points over the opening 20 minutes. Keuka turned the ball over 17 times in the opening half to 11 for the Tigers.

Keuka leads the all-time series between the two schools, 19-6.

The Tigers will play No. 4 SUNY Geneseo in the fifth place game at Nazareth College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
