ROCHESTER, NY – Senior forward #
Kelley Prom (Grafton, WI/Wisconsin Wild)# scored with 13:50 left in regulation to snap a scoreless tie and lift the No. 4 RIT women's hockey team (8-2-3) to a 1-0 win over Hamilton (3-5-2) in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Ritter Arena. RIT out-shot Hamilton, 50-13.
Prom stuffed in a loose puck at the side of the net during a scramble. Arianne Yokoyama fired the original shot on goal that was stopped by goaltender Becca Hazlett. The rebound came loose in front, with #
Belina Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/Saugeen Maitland Lightning)# and Prom getting chances. After a few whacks at the puck, Prom was barely able to slide the puck over the goal line, as a Hamilton defenseman slid into the goal to try and prevent the chance.
Hazlett was the story of the game for Hamilton, stopping 49-of-50 shots. She continually frustrated the RIT attack, making save after save to keep the Continentals in the game.
RIT nearly made it 2-0 not long after Prom's goal, as #
Kim Schlattman (Stratford, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# rang a backhander off the crossbar from in close.
Hamilton never threatened after RIT's goal. #
Amy Torgerson (Owatonna, MN/Gilmour Academy)# stopped all 13 shots she faced for her fourth win of the season, and second shutout.
RIT was 0-for-5 with the man-advantage, snapping their streak of five straight games with a power-play goal. Hamilton was 0-for-4.
Hazlett made 18 saves during the opening period in which RIT out-shot Hamilton, 18-6. Hamilton had the best two chances of the period. Torgerson had to come up big on a wrist shot by Emily Baxter from in close, then made a great save on a breakaway attempt by Amy Allen.
RIT dominated play in the second period, out-shooting Hamilton 21-2, but were once again unable to solve Hazlett. #
Sarah Dagg (St. George, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks)# was robbed by Hazlett in front, then #
Ali Hills (Honeoye Falls, NY)# had Hazlett down with an open part of the net, but could not lift the puck over the fallen goaltender's arm.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 32-4-1. The Tigers have won six straight against the Contentials dating back to the 2005-06 season.
The Tigers are right back in action on Tuesday, as they host Hamilton in a non-league contest, starting at 7 p.m.
