ROCHESTER, NY – The No. 4 RIT women's hockey team (7-2-3, 3-1-2 ECAC West) had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped, 2-1 by No.3 Elmira (11-3-1, 6-2-1 ECAC West) on Sunday afternoon. Melanie Henshaw scored the game-winning goal for Elmira 5:11 into the third period, snapping a 1-1 tie.
Caitlin Metcalf and Henshaw broke in on a 2-on-1 after a collision in the Elmira zone that left a pair of Tigers out of the play. Metcalf found Henshaw who was able to deke RIT goaltender #
Carley King (Tinley Park, IL)#, and slip a shot into the net for the winning goal.
Despite RIT holding a 24-16 in shots, neither team was able to generate many good scoring chances. Elmira's defense was able to clamp down and hold RIT off the scoreboard to hold on.
Lauren Sullivan made 23 saves for Elmira, who have now played three of the top-five teams (No. 5 Middlebury, No. 1 Amherst, and No. 4 RIT in its last four games, spanning six days. Elmira finished that stretch 3-0-1. Alex Bresler also scored for the Soaring Eagles.
King stopped 14 shots for the Tigers, who play 12 of their final 13 games against ECAC West opponents. #
Missy Hall (Chesterland, OH/Gilmour Academy)# scored RIT's lone goal.
Both teams were 1-for-4 with the man-advantage.
Just like yesterday, Elmira scored the lone goal in a sloppy first period. Neither team was able generate any good scoring chances, as every shot was taken from the perimeter. RIT held a 7-6 edge in shots over the opening 20 minutes.
Bresler's shot from the left point deflected off a Tiger defenseman in front and got past a screened King to give the Soaring Eagles a 1-0 lead, 8:34 into the contest.
RIT recorded the equalizer 3:22 into the second period, on the power-play, as Hall redirected a nifty pass from Arianne Yokoyama for her sixth goal of the season. #
Traci Galbraith (Oakville, Ontario/Burlington Jr. Barracudas)# circled with the puck at the point, dropped a pass to Yokoyama, who made a great cross ice pass to Hall, who was able to put the puck past Sullivan.
Despite holding Elmira to just five shots on goal in the second period, King had to make a few key saves to keep the game tied. Her best save of the period came when she robbed Jillyane DeBus from in close late in the frame. Elmira held a distinct territorial advantage over the final half of the period.
The Tigers out-shot Elmira 12-5 in the period and held a 19-11 edge after 40 minutes of play.
Elmira leads the all-time series between the two schools, 8-2-2.
