ONEONTA, NY - The RIT volleyball team opened the 2009 season by splitting a pair of matches on Friday at the Holiday Inn Invitational, hosted by Hartwick College. RIT defeated SUNY Oswego to open the season in four games by scores 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-21. RIT dropped its second match of the evening, falling to St. Lawrence in three games, 25-22, 25-21, 25-15.
Victoria Petko (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) slammed 35 kills and hit .347 in the two matches, while adding 15 digs and seven blocks.
Rebecca Moore (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo) added 11 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Chrtistina Worth also tallied 11 kills.
Defensively, freshman libero
Audrey DiPoala (Victor, NY/Victor) recorded 19 digs, while
Melanie Springer (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) chipped in with 11.
RIT will return to action at the Holiday Inn Invitational on Saturday morning, as they face Union at 10 a.m. The Tigers will then conclude tournament play against a yet-to-be determined opponent, either at 2:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
