Volleyball defeats Elmira and loses to Ithaca at Empire 8 crossover on Saturday

ONEONTA, NY -
The RIT volleyball team (11-7, 3-1 Empire 8) defeated Elmira (7-4, 2-2 Empire 8) in five games and lost to Ithaca (10-7, 1-0 Empire 8) in four games in Empire 8 crossover play at Hartwick on Saturday.  The Tigers defeated Elmira, 25-22, 18-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-13, and lost to Ithaca, 21-25, 17-25, 25-23, 16-25.  The loss to Ithaca snapped a five-match winning streak for RIT.

Freshman setter Cristine Schiavello (West Chester, PA/Unionville) dished out a season-high 42 assists to go along with three blocks.  Senior middle hitter Victoria Petko (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) hit a robust .429 with 24 kills, 12 digs, and seven blocks.  Rebecca Moore (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo) hit .400, while slamming 10 kills.  Katie Cooper (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) matched Petko's .429 hitting percentage, chipping in with eight kills and five blocks.  Audrey DiPoala (Victor, NY/Victor) added 12 digs.  Alli Kamsch (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) recorded four kills and three blocks.

The Tigers hit .354 as a team in the win, including .440 in game one, .542 in game four, and .500 in game five against Elmira.

In the loss to Ithaca, Petko slammed 13 kills to go along with three service aces.  Moore and Ashlie Baker (Northridge, UT/Northridge) each had eight kills.  The duo of Schiavello and Melanie Springer (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) combined to dish out 33 assists.

On Friday, RIT defeated Hartwick and Alfred, each in three games to kick off Empire 8 play.

The second Empire 8 crossover weekend is Oct. 23-24 at Nazareth.  RIT returns to the court on Wednesday, as they travel to play SUNY Cortland.  The match begins at 7 p.m.
