ITHACA, NY - The RIT volleyball team (5-4) finished fourth out of 10 teams at the 2009 Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College. RIT, who won both matches on Friday, opened Saturday by dropping a heartbreaking, five-game match to Widener University, but rebounded to defeat St. John Fisher in four games to advance to the third place game. RIT then dropped the third place match to SUNY Geneseo in four games. Senior middle hitter
Victoria Petko (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) was named to the All-Tournament team.
Widener opened the match by winning the first game, 25-17. RIT rebounded to win the next two games, 26-24, and 25-19. Widener rallied to win game four, 25-21, and took the decisive fifth game, 15-8.
Petko led the way offensively, with 19 kills, 13 digs, and four blocks. Freshman
Melanie Springer (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) recorded 15 digs and compiled a team-best five service aces.
Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) dished out 31 assists, while freshman libero
Audrey DiPoala (Victor, NY/Victor) recorded 24 digs.
RIT lost the first game to St. John Fisher, 25-20, but rebounded to win the final three games, 25-18, 25-15, 25-14.
Petko led the team with 18 kills, while hitting . 325. Freshman
Jess Pike (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) chipped in with 10 kills and five service aces.
Katie Cooper (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) also slammed five service aces. Worth had 35 assists, while DiPoala recorded 21 digs.
In the third place game, RIT dropped game one to SUNY Geneseo 25-17, but won game two, 25-14. Geneseo then won the final two games, 25-21, and 25-22.
Petko recorded 14 kills, three aces and three blocks. Jessica Moore slammed 11 kills, while Worth dished out 28 assists.
Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman) led the team with five blocks.
On Friday, the Tigers posted a dramatic, five-game win over SUNY Brockport, 25-16, 25-19, 24-26, 21-25, 15-12. The Tigers came right back and defeated SUNY Oneonta in four games, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-17 in the nightcap.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, as they host the RIT Invitational.
