ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT women's hockey team (16-2-2, 12-2-1 ECAC West) tallied its third straight win, 4-1 over #6 Amherst (13-4-0, 12-0-0 NESCAC) on Saturday afternoon at Ritter Arena. The contest marked the most goals Amherst has allowed in a game since their 4-1 loss to SUNY Plattsburgh on December 7, 2007.
Special teams were the key in today's contest, with four power play goals and a short-handed tally. RIT was 3-for-7 with the man-advantage, while holding Amherst to 1-for-11 on the power-play.
Amherst out-shot RIT 31-19, including 13-3 in the final period.
RIT dominated play in the first period, as
#Erica Owczarczak (West Seneca, NY/Buffalo Bisons)# (West Seneca, NY/Buffalo Bisons) and
#Megan Kobar (Calgary, Alberta)# (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Chaos) started off the scoring for the Tigers on two separate power play occasions.
Owczarczak got on the board on a goal with assists from
#Missy Hall (Chesterland, OH/Gilmour Academy)# (Chesterland, OH/Gilmour Academy) and
#Maegan Geypens (Oshawa, Ontario/Durham Lightning)# (Oshawa, Ontario/Durham Lightning) nearly 13 minutes into the game. The Tigers set up the power play neatly and saw a clean goal as Owczarczak's shot from the point found its way through traffic and past Amherst goaltender Kathryn Elek.
RIT converted another power play opportunity with just over seven minutes left in the period, during which Kobar converted a rebound off a point shot by Hall that was tipped by
#Kylie Mazzetta (Lakewood, CO/Colorado Selects)# (Lakewood, CO/Colorado Selects). That goal turned out to be the game-winner.
The second period started off a bit slower for the Tigers, as Amherst added one to the board on the power play, making it 2-1. Randi Zukas wristed a shot from the point through traffic with assists going to Julia Koch and Tarasai Karega from the point.
RIT and Amherst traded power play chances for the middle of the period. RIT forward

#Sarah Dagg (St. George, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks)# (St. George, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks), her 10th of the season. The short-handed tally puts Stack tied for first in the nation with four and marks RIT's 10th short-handed goal of the season, first in all of Division III.
RIT added a fourth goal to the board on the power play with just under two minutes left in the period. Sophomore defenseman

The third period saw no scoring despite RIT being short-handed for over half the frame. Goaltender
#Sandra Grant (Abbotsford, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers)# (Abbotsford, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers) was sensational, making 13 saves in the third to tally 30 on the day and take the win.
RIT is back in action tomorrow when they take on #3 Middlebury at Ritter Arena. The contest begins at 2 p.m.
