ROCHESTER, NY – Visiting Hartwick (11-12, 6-8 Empire 8) used a 15-0 run late in the second half to erase a 58-56 deficit and defeat the RIT women's basketball team (4-19, 1-13 Empire 8) 71-60 at Clark Gym on Sunday afternoon.
Hartwick trailed 58-56 after #Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport)# (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) nailed a 3-pointer for RIT with 6:12 left. The Hawks tied the game on a pair of free throws by Katie Caddell, and went up 61-58 on a 3-pointer by Shamia Dean. Hartwick upped the lead to 71-58 on a 3-pointer by Fritzi Flores with 1:58 left.
Hartwick was 19-of-21 from the line, and hit 18-of-20 in the second half.
Lauren Ploof led the Hawks with 21 points, seven assists and six boards. She was 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Flores added 20 points, six rebounds and five steals. Danee Harrison recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. Katie Caddell added 11 points.
RIT shot 46 percent from the field (23-for-50), but turned the ball over 25 times.
#Anne Wapshare (Blasdell, NY/Blasdell)# (Blasdell, NY/Blasdell) led four Tigers in double figures with 13 points. She was 5-for-6 from the field. #Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored 12 points, grabbed 10 boards and added seven blocks. #Charley Scott-McGrail (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame)# (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) added 11 points and eight boards, while Furman had 10 points.
#Kelly Votolato (Raynham, MA/Cranston East)# (Cranston, RI/Raynham East) chipped in with a career-best tying seven assists.
RIT took its first lead of the day, 49-47 on a lay-up by Wapshare with 11:30 left.
Both teams came out on fire in the first half. Hartwick used a 14-2 run early in the half to take an 18-6 lead. RIT chipped away at the lead for the rest of half and got to the break down three, 36-33. RIT cut the lead to 34-33 in the final minute on a three-pointer by Furman, but a steal by Fritzi Flores and lay-up by Lauren Ploof upped the Hawks lead to three.
Five Tigers had at least five points in the opening half. Ploof and Flores each had 11 points in the opening 20 minutes for the Hawks. RIT shot 48 percent (13-for-27) from the field, but turned the ball over 13 times. Hartwick shot 44 percent and had 10 turnovers.
Hartwick leads the all-time series, 29-6. Earlier this season, Hartwick defeated RIT, 60-33 in Oneonta on Jan. 25.
RIT honored Votolato, a senior, before the game.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, as they host Nazareth in the regular season home finale at 6 p.m.
