Women's basketball lets second half lead slip away in loss to Stevens

ROCHESTER, NY –
The duo of Jill Barrett and Brittany Fuller combined to score 48 points, lifting visiting Stevens (4-4, 2-0 Empire 8) to a 76-64 win over host RIT (3-4, 0-2 Empire 8) in Empire 8 action on Sunday afternoon.

RIT led 47-42 on a 3-pointer by #Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport)# with 13:23 left before the Ducks went on a 13-2 run over the next 5:26 to go up 55-49. Fuller gave Stevens its first lead since 3-0 in the first half, 49-47 with 11:08 left. The Ducks would not relinquish the lead.

Barrett led all scorers with 25 points to go along with 16 boards. Fuller added 23 points and five rebounds. Kathleen Schuckers chipped in with 14 points, five assists, and four steals for the Ducks.

Furman led RIT with 20 points and five assists. #Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# recorded her 20th career double-double, with 17 points and 15 rebounds. She shot 8-for-12 from the field, dished out five assists, recorded three blocks, and three steals. #Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# added 10 points for RIT.

The Tigers came out hot, hitting 6-of-8 shots to take a 14-3 lead. The Tigers upped their lead to 13 points, 27-14 on a jumper by #Anne Wapshare (Blasdell, NY/Immaculata Academy)# with 5:56 left in the half. Stevens responded, going on an 11-2 run to cut the RIT lead to 29-25 late in the half. Furman hit a big jumper as time expired in the half to give RIT the 34-29 lead at the break.

Stevens shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, and 45 percent overall in the game. RIT shot 49 percent from the field in the contest. Stevens won the battle of the boards, 34-28, and had 16 turnovers to RIT's 22.

All five Stevens players who started the second half played all 20 minutes.

Stevens scored the first basket of the game, but RIT scored the next 14 on 6-of-8 shooting to take a 14-3 lead.  RIT led by as much as 13, 27-14 midway through the half.  The Tigers shot 56 percent during the opening 20 minutes. Furman led all scorers with 12 points in the first half, on 5-of-6 shooting, while Brittany Fuller led the Ducks with 11 points.

Stevens leads the all-time series between the two schools, 4-1. Last season, the two teams split the season series, winning on their respective home courts. The Tigers defeated the Ducks last season at home, on a lay-up by #Charley Scott-McGrail (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame)# with six seconds left, 63-62 for their lone Empire 8 win.

RIT closes out the 2009 calendar year on Sunday, Dec. 13, as they host Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-league contest at 6 p.m.
