AMHERST, MA - The fourth-ranked women's hockey team (5-0-2) extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to seven games with a 1-1 tie against No. 2 Amherst (4-0-2) on Friday evening. Amherst scored with 1:41 left in regulation to earn the tie. Amherst is the defending NCAA Champion.
Both teams played stifling defense throughout, despite a total of 72 shots in the game. Amherst out-shot RIT 39-33, with each team firing 16 shots in the third period.
Freshman goaltender #
Carley King (Tinley Park, IL)# was excellent in goal for RIT, stopping 38 shots. For the second straight game, King lost the shutout with exactly 1:41 left in the third period.
Amherst's Courtney Hanlon won the face-off back to Julia Koch. Koch's shot from the line had eyes, going through a maze of bodies in front and eluding King, who never saw the shot.
Junior forward #
Katie Stack (Batavia, NY/Rochester Edge)# scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season early in the second period to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Tigers put the pressure on Amherst while playing 5-on-5, keeping the puck in the offensive zone for an extended period. Stack grabbed a rebound off a blocked shot, wheeled around and slid a backhander from the right circle in.
Amherst's Sinead Murphy made 32 saves in the tie for Amherst, who has allowed just four goals in six games this season.
RIT went 0-for-3 with the man-advantage. It is the first time RIT did not score a power-play goal this season. Amherst was 0-for-5 on the power-play.
RIT is now 7-0-2 all-time against the Lord Jeffs.
The same two teams meet on Saturday at 3 p.m.
