Women's basketball wins thriller over Cazenovia

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with an 81-76 win over Cazenovia College in the opening round game of the 2009 RIT Tip-Off Classic. RIT will face St. Lawrence in the championship game on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. The Saints defeated Brockport State in the second game on Saturday.

RIT came out sluggish in the first half, trailing by as many as 16 points. The Tigers committed 22 turnovers leading to 12 Cazenovia points, but shot well form the floor, shooting 51.7% for the half.

The Tigers finally got into gear and went on a 21-6 run midway through the opening half, cutting the Wildcats lead to one point on a layup by Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool).

Cazenovia's Megan McDermott closed out the scoring in the first half with a layup with six seconds to play, making the score 42-36 Wildcats at the half.

RIT took their first lead of the game with 17:29 to play in the second half on a made free throw by sophomore #Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)#, giving the Tigers a 45-44 lead. She finished with a team-high 20 points and 18 rebounds.

Cazenovia answered right back and took an eight-point lead on a pair of free throws by McDermott, who finished with 11 points on the day for Cazenovia.

Freshman #Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# scored two of her 10 second-half points with 12:11 to play in the second half to give RIT a 56-55 lead. Altogether, there were four ties in the second half and five lead changes.

The Tigers took the lead for good with 2:44 to play in regulation on a layup by Dennis. She scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half.

#Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport)# put the game away with a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining in the game to give RIT their second win of the season. Furman finished with nine points, six assists, four steals and five rebounds.

Sophomore #Brianna O'Dell (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenedehowa)# added 15 points off the bench for the Tigers to go along with seven rebounds, two assists and three steals. Junior co-captain #Jasmine Maisonet (Baldwin, NY/Sacred Heart Academy)# scored nine points, dished out five assists and had three steals. Havens scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Colleen Clarke was outstanding for Cazenovia, scoring 35 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor. She was 16-of-16 from the free throw line and had five steals. Samantha Allen scored 12 points for the Wildcats, while Megan McDermott added 11 points.

Cazenovia will face SUNY Brockport in the consolation game at 12 pm on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers will face St. Lawrence in the championship game at 2 pm.
