CORTLAND, NY - The RIT women's tennis team dropped a nail-biter, falling to SUNY Cortland, 5-4, in a non-league dual match on Monday afternoon. The Red Dragons improve to 8-4 with the victory, while the Tigers are now 5-4.
Cortland led 2-1 after doubles play.
RIT's doubles win came on the first flight as junior
Amanda Berg (Mendham, NJ/Mendham) and senior
Alexis Stanley (Vestal, NY/Vestal) posted an 8-3 win. Berg and Stanley also won the top two singles flights. Berg defeated Lorraine Jelinek at first singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Stanley outlasted Stephanie DiCapua at second singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Berg's win tied the match at 4-4 to set up the decisive finish at sixth singles. The Tigers also picked up a win by sophomore
Marie Revekant (Pittsford, NY/East Rochester) at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-2.
Cortland's Megan Bagg rallied for a three-set victory over
Julie Burkett (McDonald, PA/West Allegheny) at sixth singles to snap a 4-4 tie. Burkett won the first set 7-6, with a 7-4 tiebreaker, but Bagg came back to win the next two sets, 6-0 and 6-1. The sixth singles flight was the last to finish.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, as they host Empire 8 foe Alfred at 4 p.m.
