ELMIRA, NY - The RIT women's tennis team (6-4, 5-1 Empire 8) clinched an Empire 8 playoff berth by defeating Elmira College 8-1 at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. RIT Can finish no worse than third in E8 play.
RIT secured two doubles wins, and swept all six singles matches. The first doubles team of junior
Amanda Berg (Mendham, NJ/Mendham) and senior
Alexis Stanley (Vestal, NY/Vestal) posted an 8-2 win. In addition, the third doubles duo of
Marie Revekant (Pittsford, NY/East Rochester) and
Julie Burkett (McDonald, PA/West Allegheny) also recorded an 8-2 victory.
Berg improved to 12-2 this season and moved her unbeaten streak in E8 matches to 16, with a 6-3, 6-0 win at first singles. Stanley secured a 6-3, 6-1 win at second singles, while
Michele Caporali (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) won 6-4, 6-2 at third singles.
Lindsey Gibson (Glastonbury, CT/Mercy), Revekant and Burkett all picked up straight-set wins at fourth, fifth, and sixth singles.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, as they host Empire 8 foe Ithaca at 1 p.m.
