Women's Basketball Drops Opening Round Game of 2009 J.P. Morgan Chase Scholarship Tournament to St. John Fisher

Senior guard #Kelly Votolato (Raynham, MA/Cranston East)# (Raynham, MA/Cranston East) poured in a career-high 10 points but it wasn't enough, as the seventh-seeded RIT women's basketball team fell to #2 St. John Fisher, 58-45 in first round action of the 2009 J.P. Morgan Chase Scholarship Tournament at Nazareth College on Tuesday evening.

Junior guard #Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport)# (Coudersport, NY/Coudersport) poured in 15 points, Freshman #Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored eight points, added 11 rebounds, four steals and four blocked shots.

RIT could not stop Fisher's Mary Kate Comfort, who led all scorers with 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field.

The Tigers turned the ball over 24 times and shot 32.8 percent from the field. RIT was 0-for-19 from 3-point range

Fisher out-rebounded RIT 49-43, but shot just 37 percent (10-of-27) from the free-throw line and 0-for-8 from 3-point range. 

Both teams started slow, struggling to crack 10 points by the midway point of the first half. St. John Fisher led 11-8 with 8:59 left, when Dennis left the game with an injury. St. John Fisher scored the next nine points over the next three minutes to go up 20-8. RIT fought back and cut the lead to six, but a few late baskets by the Cardinals made the score 29-18 at the break.

RIT shot 33.3 percent from the field (9-for-27) and turned the ball over 16 times in the first half. Furman led the Tigers with six first-half points.

The schools also met a week ago, with St. John Fisher defeating RIT, 59-36 at Clark Gym. The Cardinals lead the all-time series, 19-2. 

The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, as they host second round action of the Chase Tournament. RIT will host the loser of the #3 Nazareth vs. #6 SUNY Geneseo contest at 3:30 p.m.
