LOWELL, MA -- The RIT men's hockey were defeated by UMASS-Lowell 6-3 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Tigers fall to 5-8-1 overall on the season.
UMASS-Lowell took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of first-period, even strength goals. Kory Falite gave the River Hawks a 1-0 lead at 9:15 of the first. Scott Campbell made it 2-0 at 15:45 of the first off a rebound on a save by
Louis Menard (Chicoutimi, Quebec/Ottawa Senators). Menard made two pad saves early in the first period to keep the game scoreless
Matt Crowell (Kelowna, British Columbia/Williams Lake Timberwolves) (Kelowna, BC) scored a goal with 51 seconds remaining in the first period to cut the River Hawks lead in half. He took a pass from
Andrew Favot (King City, Ontario/Aurora Tigers) (King City, ON) who dug the puck out from behind the net and fired a wrist shot from the right face-off dot that beat Nevin Hamilton underneath his glove for his third goal of the season.
It took the River Hawks 17 seconds to take a two-goal lead on a goal from Scott Campbell. He and Nick Schaus worked the give-and-go off the opening face-off to perfection. Campbell fed Schaus streaking from his defensive position and he fed it back to Campbell who one-timed it into the open net for a 3-1 UMASS-Lowell lead.
RIT responded with a 5-on-3 power play goal at 8:51 of the second period, cutting the River Hawks lead to 3-2.
Cameron Burt (Detroit, Mich./Green Bay Gamblers) (Detroit, MI) fed
Jesse Newman (Kelowna, British Columbia/Trail Smokeeaters) (Kelowna, BC) along the half-boards. He sent a cross-ice pass to Crowell who one-timed the puck into the open net for his second goal of the afternoon and fourth of the season.
Lowell had a 5-on-3 power play for a 1:13 late in the second period, converting on a goal from Campbell, his third of the afternoon, making it 4-2 Rive Hawks.
The River Hawks made it 5-2 with 8:37 to play in the third on a goal from Sammy D'Agostino. In a scrum in front of RIT's net he poked the loose puck for Lowell.
David Vallorani added a power play goal in the latter stages of the third to make it 6-2 Lowell.
Brennan Sarazin (Nepean, Ontario/Nepean Raiders) (Nepean, ON) added a late power play goal on assists from
Chris Haltigin (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Blades) (Oakville, ON) and Crowell to make it 6-3 River Hawks.
The Tigers went 2-for-4 with the man advantage, while allowing two power play goals in seven chances for Lowell.
Louis Menard (Chicoutimi, Quebec/Ottawa Senators) (Chicoutimi, PQ) took the loss allowing six goals, making 22 saves. The Tigers were out shot 28-16.
RIT returns to action next weekend when they face #11 Air Force in a weekend series in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
