ELMIRA, NY -
The #1 Elmira women's hockey team (5-0-0, 3-0-0 ECAC West) scored five unanswered goals over the final two periods to pull away and hand RIT (3-1-0, 2-1-0 ECAC West) its first loss of the 2008-09 season, 6-1 at the Murray Athletic Center on Friday.

Jamie Huntley recorded the hat-trick for Elmira.  Melanie Henshaw, Lauryn DePaul and Lindsay Mitchell also scored for the Soaring Eagles.  Goaltender Allison Cubberley picked up the win in net for Elmira, stopping 18 shots.

Freshman defenseman #Erica Owczarczak (West Seneca, NY/Buffalo Bisons)# (West Seneca, NY) had RIT's lone highlight, scoring with 6:43 left in the first period to tie the game at 1.  #Katie Stack (Batavia, NY/Rochester Edge)# (Batavia, NY) won a face-off cleanly to Owczarczak, whose blast from the point hit a body in front of the net and deflected over the goal line.

RIT appeared to take a 2-1 lead late in the first period on the power-play, as #Keltie Jones (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Jr. Barracudas)# (Burlington, Ontario) shoved a loose puck from in close into the net.  Unfortunately for RIT, the referee lost sight of the puck and blew the play dead before the puck crossed the line, negating the goal.

Elmira, the number one team in Division III, out-shot RIT 34-19.  The Soaring Eagles were 1-for-8 on the power-play, while RIT was scoreless on five chances with the man-advantage.

#Sandra Grant (Abbotsford, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers)# (Abbotsford, BC)
started in net for RIT, allowing four goals before being pulled early in the third period.  #Amy Torgerson (Owatonna, MN/Gilmour Academy)# (Wentsville, MO) played the final 18 minutes.

Elmira leads the all-time series between the two schools, 7-2-0.  Last season, Elmira won the first game of a two-game series at RIT, but the Tigers battled back to win the following afternoon.

The same two teams are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m.
