HOBOKEN, NJ - The second-seeded RIT women's tennis team defeated the #3 Nazareth College Golden Flyers 5-0 in a thrilling match at the Empire 8 tournament semifinal, played on a sunny afternoon at Stevens Institute of Technology. The Tigers will play top-seeded Ithaca in the championship on Sunday at 10 a.m.
RIT stepped out onto the courts strong, dominating in all three doubles matches. The first doubles duo of senior
Brianne Francisco (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) and sophomore #
Amanda Berg (Mendham, NJ/Mendham)# (Mendham, NJ/Mendham) improved their record to 12-2, winning their match 8-2. At second doubles, senior
Kseniya Klyachko (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and junior
Alexis Stanley (Vestal, NY/Vestal) (Vestal, NY/Vestal) won their match 8-3, while seniors
JoJo Cash (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and
Sara Paduano (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) battled it out to take third doubles 8-6.
With only two points needed to win the match, the Tigers remained strong in singles. Berg took her match 6-2, 6-3 at first to improve her record to 14-2. Paduano stayed tough at sixth singles, pulling out a 6-3, 6-2 win to end the match.
If RIT defeats Ithaca, they earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Ithaca defeated the Tigers, 7-2 on Sept. 13 at RIT.
