ROCHESTER, NY - Four players scored in double figures, as the RIT men's basketball team (6-5, 2-3 Empire 8) scored 55 second-half points to hand #13 Stevens Insititute of Technology its first loss of the season, 91-85 at the Clark Gym on Friday evening.
RIT used a 15-5 run over a four minute span early in the second half to erase a six-point deficit and would never trail from there. The Tiger bench outscored Stevens 38-17.
The wild second half produced 103 points, 53 free throw attempts and 36 personal fouls. The Tigers shot 56 percent from the field in the second half and shot 50 percent overall in the contest. Overall, both teams attempted 37 free throws.
Junior center Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) led the way with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field and 15 rebounds. It was Carson's fifth double-double of the year.
Freshman guard Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) dished out a career-best 12 assists to go along with seven rebounds four steals and two blocks in just 19 minutes. Fellow freshman Shane Foster (Woodland Hills, CA/Calabasas) (Woodland Hills, CA/Calabasas) was 11-for-14 from the free throw line en route to scoring 17 points.
Senior Barrett Zeinfeld (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) and sophomore Adam Sweet (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) combined to drill seven three-pointers and score 31 points. Zeinfeld made four from behind the arc, moving him into a tie for third place in made 3-pointers in a career at RIT with 185. He scored 15 points. Sweet tallied a career-high 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 shooting from the line.
Virgil Gray led the Ducks (8-1, 4-1 Empire 8) with 22 points. Anthony Passalacqua chipped in with 15 points, while Waleed Farid scored 12 points, added nine caroms and dished out six assists.
RIT out-rebounded Stevens 43-40. RIT was 25-for-37 from the foul line, was Stevens was 24-of-37. The game featured five ties and five lead changes.
Stevens led 37-36 at halftime. RIT led 29-20 with 8:47 left in the half, but Stevens used a 13-3 run late in the half to take the lead, 33-32.
Stevens came into the contest allowing just over 59 points per game.
Tonight's contest was the second meeting between the two schools. RIT scored a 76-67 win over the Ducks during the 1995-96 season.
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday, as they play in the first round of the 2008 J.P. Morgan Chase Scholarship Tournament. Tournament pairings will be announced on Sunday evening.
