ROCHESTER, NY - Freshman Daniel Holowaty (Strongsville, OH/St. Ignatious) (Strongsville, OH/St. Ignatious) scored his first collegiate goal in the 55th minute, as the RIT men's soccer team scored two second half goals to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit and defeat rival St. John Fisher by a score of 2-1 in an Empire 8 conference match at RIT Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers have now won three straight and extended its Empire 8 regular season unbeaten streak to 11 games, dating back to October 8, 2005. They are now 7-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play.
Holowaty's goal was the result of perfect execution off a corner kick. Freshman Chad Palumbo (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois) (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois) took the corner kick from the right side in the box. Allen Nicholson (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) gathered the pass and crossed a feed to Holowaty, who headed the ball home for the goal.
Senior Mark Frisicano (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) scored his sixth goal of the season and 24th of his collegiate career five minutes earlier to tie the game. Frisicano took a cross from Chris Somers (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) at the side of the net and tapped it into the open goal.
Frisicano is now tied for 10th all-time at RIT in career goal scoring.
RIT out-shot Fisher 11-4 in the second half. Both teams fired 15 shots in the game.
The Cardinals scored the only goal of the half in the 40th minute, as David Garabedian corralled a loose ball about 30-yards in transition and fed a streaking Luke Lennox. Lennox's low shot eluded RIT goalkeeper Alan Smith (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) from just inside the box. The goal was Lennox's eighth of the season.
The Cardinals held an advantage in play over the first 45 minutes, out-shooting RIT 11-4.
RIT's best chance of the half came in the 13th minute, as Jeff Diaz (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) ripped a shot from just outside the box, but St. John Fisher goalkeeper Adam Durst came up with a big diving save to keep the game scoreless.
Smith made eightsaves to pick up the win. Durst stopped six shots for the Cardinals, who fall to 6-4-0 and 1-1 in Empire 8 play.
The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday, as they travel down the road to play the University of Rochester. The contest begins at 7 p.m.
