ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men’s basketball team dropped its third consecutive contest on Saturday afternoon, falling to Alfred University 69-60 at the Clark Gym.
Alfred (3-9, 1-1 Empire 8) took control of the game midway through the second half, using a 23-10 run to erase a 39-38 deficit and go up 62-49. From there, the Saxons held on for their first Empire 8 win of the season.
RIT (5-5, 0-2 Empire 8) remains winless in Empire 8 play, despite out-rebounding Alfred 42-29, including 22 offensive boards.
The Saxons shot a blistering 61 percent (14-of-23) from the field in the second half. Robby McCarter led the Saxons with 21 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and 7-of-9 shooting from the free throw line. Dillon Stein added 17 points.
Tim Bacon (Massena. NY/Massena) (Massena, NY/Massena) led RIT with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) added 13 points and four assists.
Rick Whitwood (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) recorded eight points and eight rebounds.
RIT shot just 32 percent in the second half and scored just 19 points in a 28-minute span over the first and second half.
RIT led 30-27 at the half, despite holding a 27-12 lead with 7:47 left. Alfred ended the half on a 15-3 run, punctuated by a three-pointer by Jared Patt just before the buzzer sounded. Before Alfred’s run, RIT went on a 15-0 run of their own over 4:22 to break a 12-12 tie.
The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday, as they host a first round game of the 2007 J.P. Morgan Chase Scholarship Tournament at 8:15 p.m. Seedings for the Chase Tournament will be released on Sunday evening.
