Men's Hockey Topples #16 Quinnipiac

NORTHFORD, CT -- Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen)'s (Toronto, ON) goal at 10:11 of the third period proved to be the game-winner as RIT (10-6-2) defeated #16 Quinnipiac University (8-5-4), 3-2 on Thursday evening. It was RIT's second win over a ranked opponent since joining the Division I ranks last season.

Junior netminder Jocelyn Guimond (Quebec City, PQ/Williams Lake) (Quebec City, PQ) was outstanding between the pipes for RIT, stopping 33 shots, including 12 in the third period.

Stevan Matic (Burnaby, BC/Langley Hornets) (Burnaby, BC) gave RIT a 1-0 just 36 seconds into the conest with his second goal of the season. Brennan Sarazin (Nepean, ON/Nepean Raiders) (Nepean, ON) had the lone assist on the play.

Reid Cashman tied the score at 1-1 with an even-strength goal at 10:58 of the first.

Freshman defenseman Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) (Oakville, ON) gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead at 17:49 of the first on a power play goal. Steve Pinizzotto (Mississauga, ON/Oakville Blades) (Mississauga, ON) and Al Mazur (Burnaby, BC/Langley Hornets) (Burnaby, BC) were credited with the assists.

Bryan Leitch scored the lone goal of the second period, tying the score at 2-2 at 8:56.

At 10:11 of the third Smith took a pass from Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) and fired a shot past Quinnipiac goaltender, Bud Fisher, for his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Stephen Burns (Newmarket, ON/Newmarket Hurricanes) (Newmarket, ON) had the other assist.

RIT was outshot 35-25 by the Bobcats but Guimond continued his outstanding play, allowing just two goals.

RIT went 1-for-3 on the power play and held Quinnipiac scoreless in six power play chances.

RIT will host #19 Niagara University on Saturday, January 6 at 7 p.m. in Ritter Arena.
