ELMIRA, NY - Four players scored in double figures, as the RIT men's basketball team evened its record at 7-7 in 2006-07 with an 82-70 win over Elmira College at the Speidel Gymnasium on Friday night.
Tim Bacon (Massena. NY/Massena) (Massena, NY/Massena) led RIT with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) was right behind with 15 points, eight boards and three assists.
Barrett Zeinfeld (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) drilled four 3-pointers en route to 14 points, while Rick Whitwood (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists. Scott Young (Almond, NY/Hornell) (Almond, NY/Hornell) had nine points.
Jason Brown and Joe Prunier led Elmira (2-13, 1-3 Empire 8) with 11 points apiece. Brown also had seven boards. Three players also scored nine points each for the Soaring Eagles in defeat.
The win was RIT's first in Empire 8 play this season.
The Tigers got off to a great start, shooting 51 percent from the field in the first half to grab a 49-34 halftime advantage.
RIT broke open a 13-10 game by going on an 18-0 run over a 4:09 span in the first half to go up 21. The Tigers never led by less than 10 at any point after that.
RIT used its size to out-rebound Elmira 48-33. The Tigers grabbed 18 offensive boards.
Gethers and Bacon did most of their damage during the opening 20 minutes. Gethers had 13 first half points, while Bacon added 10.
The Tigers complete their weekend road trip with an Empire 8 conference game against Ithaca College. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
