Men's Basketball Gets by Nazareth in Chase Tournament

ROCHESTER
, NY – The RIT men’s basketball team (6-6), seeded seventh in the 2007 J.P. Morgan Chase Scholarship Tournament, pulled out a tough 82-76 win over #6 Nazareth in consolation action on Friday afternoon.
 
The Tiger defense forced 24 Nazareth turnovers and recorded a season-high 17 steals.
 
The game was tied at 69 with 5:08 left, when the Tigers scored the game’s next six points on consecutive lay-ups by Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville), Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) and Rick Whitwood (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) to take a lead they would not relinquish.
 
Tim Bacon (Massena. NY/Massena) (Massena, NY/Massena) led the Tigers with 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field.  Gethers added 15 points and six boards, while Rob Hampton (Ocala, FL/Belleview) (Ocala, FL/Belleview) and Barrett Zeinfeld (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) tallied 14 points apiece. Zeinfeld scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half, while Hampton tallied 10 in the final 20 minutes.
 
Junior Colin Roy (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) dished out nine assists and recorded a career-best six steals.  Carson grabbed a career-best 11 rebounds to go along with six points.
 
Joe Canori led five Golden Flyers in double figures with 17 points.  Tyler Smith had 14 points, while Corey McAdam recorded 13 points and nine assists for Nazareth, who falls to 5-7 this season.
 
RIT shot 54 percent from the field in the second half and 45 percent for the game.  The Tigers out-rebounded Nazareth 39-31.  Sixteen of RIT’s 39 boards came on the offensive end.
 
The Tigers held a 38-36 lead at the half, ending the period on a 9-4 run.  Bacon started off on fire, scoring all 12 of his first half points in the opening 6:54.  He tallied 12 of the Tigers first 14 points.
 
Nazareth started the game hitting eight of its first 11 shots en route to shooting 52.2 percent from the field in the opening half.  The Tigers grabbed 20 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards and forced 15 Golden Flyer turnovers.

RIT will conclude its run in the Chase Tournament, as they play in the fifth place match against either Keuka or Roberts Wesleyan at Nazareth.  Tip-off is at 1:30 p.m.
