Men's Hockey Downs Holy Cross, 5-1

Steve Pinizzotto had a goal and an assist as RIT downed Holy Cross 5-1 on Saturday.

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men’s hockey team won their third straight game with a 5-1 thrashing of Holy Cross on Saturday evening at Ritter Arena. Thet Tigers took control of the game from the opening face-off, scoring two first period goals.

The win improves RIT to 6-5-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the Atlantic Hockey Association. The Crusaders fall to 7-8-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the AHA.

RIT head coach Wayne Wilson was pleased with RIT’s performance tonight.

“That was our most complete weekend of hockey as a Division I program. I thought we were strong offensively, defensively and special teams.”

Al Mazur (Burnaby, BC/Langley Hornets) (Burnaby, BC) gave RIT a 1-0 lead at 3:02 of the first period with his second goal of the season. The Tigers utilized great passing while on the power play with Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) (Oakville, ON) feeding a pass to Steve Pinizzotto (Mississauga, ON/Oakville Blades) (Mississauga, ON). He fed a cross-ice pass to Mazur who wristed a shot past Holy Cross goaltender Ian Dams.

Matt Crowell (Kelowna, BC/Williams Lake Timberwolves) (Kelowna, BC) made it 2-0 RIT on his third goal of the season. Bobby Raymond (Lucknow, ON/Owen Sound Greys) (Lucknow, ON) took a shot from the point that was blocked by a Holy Cross defender. The rebound came to Crowell who fired a wrist shot past Dams.

RIT took a 3-0 lead on a slap shot from Steve Pinizzotto (Mississauga, ON/Oakville Blades). He ripped a shot from the face-off circle, beating Dams over his right shoulder. Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) (Toronto, ON) and Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) (Ste.-Therese, PQ) had the assists on Pinizzotto’s second tally of the contest.

Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) scored his first collegiate goal at 4:52 of the second on assists from Lambert and Darrell Draper (Tigard, OR/Cowichon Capitals) (Tigard, OR). He also beat Dams on a high slap shot.

Brian Kolb cut RIT’s lead to 3-1 with his third goal of the season at 6:04 of the second. Ryan Driscoll and Rob Forshner had the assists on the play.

Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) rounded out the scoring for the Tigers at 12:07 of the third on a sweet breakaway goal. Darrell Draper (Tigard, OR/Cowichon Capitals) (Tigard, OR) lofted a pass from his own blue-line right onto Lambert’s tape. Lambert broke in and beat Dams with a sweet move, scoring into an open net on a backhanded shot.

RIT out shot Holy Cross 25-23 on Saturday. The Tigers went 2-for-6 with the man advantage and held the Crusader’s power play to zero goals in nine chances.

Louis Menard (Chicoutimi, PQ/Ottawa Jr. Senators) (Chicoutimi, PQ) played a solid game in net for RIT, making 22 saves and allowing one goal. Ian Dams made 20 saves in net for Holy Cross.

RIT will face AHA foe, Mercyhurst College, next Friday at 7 pm in Erie, PA.
