ROCHESTER, NY -- On the strength of a seven-goal third period the RIT men's hockey team defeated Lebanon Valley College, 12-2 in ECAC West action Friday night. The 12 goals are the highest goal output by the Tigers this season.
Darren Doherty (Duoro, Ont./Cobourg Cougars) (Douro, Ontario) gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead just 2:40 into the contest on assists from
Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, Quebec/Cumberland Grads) (St.-Therese, Quebec) and
J.R. Holmes (Toronto, Ont./Soo Thunderbirds) (Toronto, Ontario).
Darrell Draper (/Cowichon Caitals) (Portland, OR) made it 2-0 RIT with a pretty backhanded goal at 10:35 of the first. Draper sped down the right side, driving hard to the net. The freshman winger cut to the front and roofed a backhanded shot over Sonny Holding's shoulder for his fifth goal of the season. Lambert and
Stephen Burns (Newmarket, Ont./Newmarket Hurricanes) (Newmarket, Ontario) had the assists on the play.
Matt Smith (Toronto, Ont./Kitchener Dutchmen) (Toronto, Ontario) rounded out the scoring in the first with his power play goal at 15:43. Assists went to
Jason Chafe (Stoney Creek, Ont./Burlington Cougars) (Stoney Creek, Ontario) and
Marc Hyman (Thornhill, Ont./Thornhill Rattlers) (Thornhill, Ontario).
Lebanon Valley cut RIT's lead to 3-1 :55 seconds into the second period on a goal by
Andy Rummel. He took a pass from
Jonas Svensson and beat RIT goalie
David Wrisley (Ithaca, NY/Northwood Prep) (Ithaca, NY) for his second goal of the season.
Roberto Orofiamma (Woodbridge, Ont./Vaughn Vipers) (Woodbridge, Ontario) and
Ricky Walton (Hamilton, Ont./Hamilton Kilty Bees) (Hamilton, Ontario) each scored the first of their two goals of the game in the second as RIT held a 5-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
After an
Alex Beatrice goal just 1:44 into the third cut RIT's lead to 5-2 the Tigers exploded for seven unanswered goals, blowing the game wide open. Three of RIT's seven goals in the third came on the power play.
Brent Patry (Ottawa, Ont./Cumberland Grads) (Ottawa, Ontario) tallied his first career goal at RIT and started the scoring rally. Patry skated onto a rebound off a
Ricky Walton (Hamilton, Ont./Hamilton Kilty Bees) shot for his first collegiate goal.
Matt Smith (Toronto, Ont./Kitchener Dutchmen) tallied his second goal of the evening at 11:22 and
Tony Bifulco (Falmouth, Maine/Tulsa Crude) (Falmouth, ME) tallied a power play goal at 13:39.
After a pair of even strength goals by Walton and Orofiamma made it 10-2 RIT
Darrell Draper (/Cowichon Caitals) tallied a power play goal at 16:45 to make it 11-2.
Tony Bifulco (Falmouth, Maine/Tulsa Crude) rounded out the scoring with his power play tally at 19:55 on assists from
Matt Smith (Toronto, Ont./Kitchener Dutchmen) and
Ricky Walton (Hamilton, Ont./Hamilton Kilty Bees).
The Tigers went 5-9 on the power play and outshot the Flying Dutchmen 56-17.
David Wrisley (Ithaca, NY/Northwood Prep) recorded his first win of the season for RIT, making 15 saves as the Tigers improved to 13-8-1 on the season and 7-3-1 in the ECAC West.
Sonny Holding made 44 saves for Lebanon Valley who fall to 5-17-1 on the season and 1-9-0 in the ECAC West.
The Tigers finish off the regular season on Saturday when they host #2 Manhattanville College at 7 p.m. in Ritter Arena.
