ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT Men's Basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season after defeating York College (NY) by the score of 66-61 on Friday Night in the 20th Harold J. Brodie Tournament. Senior guard Fran Snyder (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon St. Jude) (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon) became the 20th player in Tiger history to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
RIT lead 33-32 at the half, before York tied the game on a free-throw by Johnathan Christian in the opening minute of the second half. After that, the Tigers went on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes, highlighted by two consecutive 3-pointers by Snyder, the second of which gave him his 1,000th point in a Tiger uniform. Rob Hampton (Ocala, FL/Belleview) (Ocala, FL/Belleview) made two layups to close out the run. Hampton gave RIT a 45-33 lead, taking a feed from Tyler Springer (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) and reaching over the rim to snatch the high pass, then slipping in the lay-up.
York would not quit however, as the Cardinals cut a 16-point RIT lead with four minutes left to three with 22 seconds left in regulation, before the Tigers made four free-throws in the final seconds to secure the win.
Snyder and Kris Kowalczyk (Albany, NY/Colonie) (Albany, NY/Colonie) led the Tigers with 10 points apiece in the victory. Kowalczyk shot 4-for-5 from the field, including 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line, while tying for the team lead with four assists.
Hampton added nine points, while Brian Hill (Rochester, NY/Wheatland-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Wheatland-Chili) and Cameron Youngblood (Philadelphia, PA/Haverford) (Philadelphia, PA/Haverford) chipped with seven points apiece. Tim Bacon (Massena, NY/Massena) (Massena, NY/Massena) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with six points. Springer also scored seven points and dished out four assists.
Jonathan Winns led York (3-5) with 16 points and five assists. Shayne Smith chipped in with 13 points and six steals. Chris Roberts tallied 11 points, while Jeffery Boone recorded 10 points and nine boards.
RIT shot 52.2 percent in the contest, including converting on 12-of-21 shots (57 percent) in the second half. The Tigers out-rebounded York 33-29.
The Tigers are back in action on Sunday, as they play Oswego State in the Brodie Tournament at 2 p.m.. York plays Oswego at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament was reduced to just three teams after Wilkes withdrew on Friday morning.
