Men's Basketball Falls to Cortland State

ROCHESTER, NY --
The RIT fell behind early in the second thanks to a 23-3 run by Cortland State, losing 66-52 to the Red Dragons on Tuesday evening. The loss drops RIT to 4-2 on the season, while Cortland State improves to 7-1.

Cortland State took an early 7-0 lead thanks to some hot shooting. The Tigers answered with a 9-2 run, tying the score at 9-9 on an offensive rebound and put-back by Tim Bacon (Massena, NY/Massena) (Massena, NY/Massena).

The two teams battled back ad forth, trading baskets. The Red Dragons opened up their biggest lead of the half of eight points on a basket and a free throw by Simon Skrelja with about three minutes to play.

Barrett Zeinfeld (Tuscon, AZ/Catalina Foothills) (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) cut the Red Dragons lead in half with one play. He nailed a three-pointer and made the free throw after being fouled in the act of shooting, making it 30-26.

After Cortland State made it 32-26 Fran Snyder (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon St. Jude) (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon St. Jude) slashed to the basket and scored the lay-up off an assist from Zeinfeld, making it 32-28 at the break.

RIT shot 36.7% from the floor in the first half on 11-of-30 shooting from the floor. Barrett Zeinfeld (Tuscon, AZ/Catalina Foothills) led RIT with eight points. Tim Bacon (Massena, NY/Massena) added seven points and grabbed four rebounds.

Cortland State shot 45.8% from the floor on 11-of-24 shooting from the floor. Frank Raniere led the Red Dragons with eight points. Simon Skrelja added six points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Red Dragons opened the second half with a 23-3 run and never looked back.

A three-pointer by Simon Skrelja with 10:07 to play in the second half gave Cortland State their biggest lead of the game at 22 points.

RIT tried to battle back, using full-court pressure and were able to cut the Red Dragons lead to 13 points at 59-46 with 4:20 to play.

That would be as close as RIT would get as Cortland State was able to stem the tide ad closed out the game with a 7-6 run making the final score 66-52.

RIT shot 35% from the field on 21-of-60 shooting. The Tigers made just 3-of-17 from three-point land and grabbed 41 rebounds. Tim Bacon (Massena, NY/Massena) led RIT with 19 points and 11 rebounds, his second straight double-double. He shot 8-of-13 from the floor and seven of his 11 rebounds were on the offensive glass. Tyler Springer (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) added a career-high nine assists.

Cortland State shot 40.7% on 11-of-24 shooting from the floor. The Red Dragons made 7-of-18 from behind the arc and grabbed 38 rebounds. Cortland State had four players score in double figures led by Simon Skrelja who had 10 points and 15 rebounds. Dave Maggiacomo added 15 points, while Dave Jutton scored 14 points.

RIT is off until January 3 when they host the University of Rochester at 8 p.m. in Clark Gym.
