GENEVA, NY -- The RIT men's basketball team began the 2005-06 campaign with a 64-44 win over Hobart College on Tuesday evening at Bristol Gym. Sophomore Barrett Zeinfeld (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) led a balanced RIT attack with 12 points.
RIT took an early first half lead against the Statesmen and never looked back. The Tigers built their biggest lead of 13 points on a jump shot from sophomore guard Kris Kowalcyzk (Albany, NY/Colonie) (Albany, NY/Colonie) at the 9:30 mark of the first half. Hobart got to within nine points but trailed 31-22 at the break.
The Tigers' defense held Hobart to 30.4% shooting in the first half, out reboundng the Statesmen 26-11. Tim Bacon (Massena, NY/Massena) (Massena, NY/Massena) led RIT with eight points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor. Fran Snyder (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon St. Jude) (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon), Drew Martin (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) (Oneonta, NY/Oneota) and Rob Hampton (Ocala, FL/Belleview) (Ocala, FL/Belleview) each chipped in five points for RIT.
RIT slowly built their lead to 20 points in the second half thanks to good shooting from the floor and stifling defense. The Tigers shot 53.8% from the floor in the second half, while holding Hobart to 22.2% shooting.
Barret Zeinfeld paced RIT in the second half with 10 points, including a pair of three pointers. Drew Martin (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) chipped in another five points and led a solid defensive effort.
RIT out rebounded Hobart 46-30 and forced seven Statesmen turnovers. RIT had five players with at least seven points led by Zeinfeld who had 12. Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) led RIT with eight rebounds, while Snyder chipped in with seven. Tyler Springer (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) dished out four assists.
