Click for BoxscorePLATTSBURGH, NY -- The RIT (5-3-2) men's hockey team resumed action on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Cardinal Classic. The 10th ranked Tigers defeated St. Michael's (3-5-0) College, 5-2. RIT will face the winner of the Plattsburgh State versus Babson game on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The first period saw the Tigers fall behind 1-0 on a goal by Mike Duffy at the 4:30 mark. The Tigers answered back less than a minute later when Michael Tucciarone (Richmond Hill, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored on an assist from Mike Tarantino (Oakville, Ont./Oakville Blades) (Oakville, Ont.) and J.R. Holmes (Toronto, Ont./Soo Thunderbirds) (Toronto, Ont.). Tarantino made it 2-0 RIT at the 9:55 mark of the first. Tarantino struck again at the 13:29 mark on assists from Tucciarone and Roberto Orofiamma (Woodbridge, Ont./Vaughn Vipers) (Woodbridge, Ont.), giving RIT a 3-1 lead. Josh Cooper tallied a late goal for St. Michael's, making it 3-2 heading into the first intermission.
RIT scored the second period's only two goals. The first was from Darren Doherty (Duoro, Ont./Cobourg Cougars) (Douro, Ont.) at the 3:16 mark of the period on an assist from Tony Bifulco (Falmouth, Maine/Tulsa Crude) (Falmouth, ME). The Tigers' second goal of the period came short handed. Michael Tucciarone (Richmond Hill, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) took a feed from Mike Tarantino (Oakville, Ont./Oakville Blades) and scored, giving RIT a 5-2 lead. The Tigers out shot St. Mike's 16-9 in the second as George Eliopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Michaels Buzzers) (Markham, Ont.) stopped all nine shots he faced in the second period.
RIT's defense stiffened in the third period, holding St. Mike's to just six shots in the third. RIT took 16 shots but were unable to light the lamp.
Mike Tarantino (Oakville, Ont./Oakville Blades) led RIT with two goals and two assists. Michael Tucciarone (Richmond Hill, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) added two goals and an assist. George Eliopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Michaels Buzzers) played all 60 minutes in net for the Tigers, making 25 saves.
