Yates was named the MVP of the 2010 Doug May Memorial Tournament, leading RIT to the championship and a 2-0-1 start to the season.  Yates was a main reason why RIT allowed just two goals in three games, and scored the game-tying goal with just 5:01 left in regulation to send the May championship game to overtime before teammate Dan Holowaty scored to win it for RIT.  Off a corner kick, Justin Dambra centered a perfect lob that Yates headed in to tie the game.  The Tiger defense allowed just eight shots on goal in three games.
