Lee Matthews joined the RIT Sports Medicine staff during the 2023-2024 school year, bringing a wealth of experience in athletic training and orthopedic care. Lee primarily works with the RIT women’s ice hockey team as well as the men’s and women’s tennis teams.
A graduate of Ithaca College, Lee earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training in 2019. He further honed his expertise by completing a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Residency at the New Hampshire Musculoskeletal Institute in 2020, where he gained advanced skills in differential diagnosis, inter-professional communication, and specialized medical subspecialties.
Lee's professional journey includes serving as the Lead Athletic Trainer at Rochester Regional Health, where he oversaw clinic operations and provided comprehensive athletic training services for multiple sports programs. He also worked as a physician extender in an orthopedic sports medicine clinic, gaining hands-on experience with patient evaluations, orthopedic bracing, and advanced rehabilitation techniques.
In addition to his civilian career, Lee served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 2016 to 2022, earning multiple accolades for his leadership and service.
Lee holds certifications as a licensed athletic trainer in New York, a BOC Athletic Trainer, and in CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer.
Beyond his clinical expertise, Lee is committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for student-athletes to thrive both on and off the field.
