John-Martin Cannon begins his second season as a volunteer assistant coach for the RIT wrestling program in 2019-20.
 
Cannon arrived at RIT after the spending two seasons as head coach at Fairport High School from 2016-18. He guided the Red Raiders to the 2017 Class AA Section V Championship, coached a New York State Champion and three place winners at the state tournament. Before that, he was a volunteer assistant at the University at Buffalo in 2013-14 and The College at Brockport the following season.
 
A standout on the mats, Cannon was a four-year starter and three-time captain at the University at Buffalo. He won 82 career matches and is just one of three Bulls wrestlers in the Division I era to compete at three NCAA Championships. In 2010-11, Cannon won the Mid-American Athletic Conference Championship and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Championship meet.
 
Cannon, a three-time National Wrestling Coaches of America (NWCA) Academic All-American, earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 2012 and obtained his master’s degree in 2015. He won the SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award in 2010 and was a two-time MAAC First Team All-Academic pick.
 
Cannon is a sixth-grade teacher in the Rochester City School District.
