Biography
BEFORE RIT:
- Received numerous cross country and Nordic skiing awards while at Webster Schroeder High School.
PERSONAL:
- Full name: Sophia Frances Gorton
- Daughter of John Gorton and Amy Gorton.
- Older sister of Claire.
- Both of her parents are RIT graduates: John graduated in 1999, Amy is class of 1995. In addition, her cousin Adam Gesner is a current student at RIT.
- Her mother swam as an undergraduate at Wittenberg and later rowed for RIT.
- Favorite athletic moment: The first time she raced her sister in a Nordic skiing event in high school. “I don’t even remember who beat who, but I felt like it was one of my best races yet.”
- Best advice received: “Do my best and forget the rest,” which she says her father tells her all the time.
- Credits her Nordic coach as her biggest athletic influence.
- Started rowing competitively in fall of 2021, because she wanted to try a new sport in college and rowing seemed fun.
- Learned how to sail a sailboat as a kid.
- Hobbies: “Doing anything outside.”
