Biography

BEFORE RIT:
  • Captain of the Shenendehowa High School women’s rowing team, 2018-2020.
  • Won the New York State Scholastic Championship for rowing in 2018.
PERSONAL:
  • Full name: Michelle Grace Carney.
  • Daughter of Stephanie Carney and the late Ronald Carney.
  • Sister of Rachel, Danielle, and Elizabeth.
  • Her father, Ronald, pitched for the St. Thomas University baseball team.
  • Attended same high school as Atlanta Braves pitcher Ian Andersen and Sacramento Kings player Kevin Huerter.
  • Started rowing when she was in the sixth grade because she had become “mesmerized” by the sport watching her sisters taking part.
  • Says the biggest influence on her athletic career is either her father or her high school teammate, Taylor Ralston. Credits both as a “constant motivation” to her.
  • Favorite athlete: Olympic rower Gevvie Stone.
  • Her 2018 season saw her return from a three-week bout with mono that had caused her to lose ten pounds. Despite the hardships, she and her team won the New York State Scholastic Championship and placed second at the SRAA National Championship Regatta.
  • Other hobbies include hiking, environmental advocacy, and dancing.
