Biography

BEFORE RIT:
  • Finished 20th in the Youth Coaxed Quad at the 55th Head of the Charles in 2020.
  • Finished 6th in the flyweight men's event at C.R.A.S.H.Bs in 2020.
  • Finished 10th in the U19 Men's Pair at the Summer National Championships in 2019.
PERSONAL:
  • Full name: Avishai Meir Dernis
  • Son of Mitchell Dernis and Brenda Kurland, brother of Shuli Dernis.
  • Born in Seattle.
  • His sister, Shuli, will row for the University of Toronto starting in 2023.
  • Started rowing in Fall 2016 after losing an arm wrestling bet to a rower.
  • Missed the 2021-22 season due to a back injury, but it did allow him to get into coaching. 
  • Lost out on the spring season of his senior year of high school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 
  • Volunteers during the summer at the Three Rivers Adaptive Rowing, assisting rowers with blindness, amputations, cerebral palsy, or other disabilities. 
  • Best advice ever received in sports career: "If you want to move up a boat, just ask." 
  • Hobbies include code-writing and learning languages (is currently taking German and trying to learn Hebrew). "I want to be a polyglot," he says.
  • Works as a coach for Fairport Crew.
