Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey shut down by RPI, 4-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT Men's Hockey team lost a 4-1 decision opposite visiting RPI, Friday.

Senior forward Matthew Wilde tallied in the eighth minute of the game for the lone goal of the first, before the Engineers scored 51 seconds into the second. RPI later scored three unanswered goals in the third to put the game away.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • RIT opened the scoring after Wilde stole puck off an RPI player's stick at the top of the Tiger zone and pushed it to senior forward Christian Catalano headed the other way. Catalano dumped a puck off the left half boards and tracked it down below the goal line before dropping a pass back to Wilde at the top of the left faceoff circle for a one-timer inside the near post at 7:35.

  • RPI evened the score 53 seconds into the second after a neutral zone turnover led to a two-on-one break. Rainers Rullers took a cross in the right faceoff circle from Ian Scherzer and put a one-timer on first-year goaltender Zach Bowen that trickled off his pads inside the left post.
  • RPI started to pull away at 7:48 of the third after Landen Hilditch sent a long outlet down the right wing to Ben Yurchuk inside the Tiger blue line. Yurchuk chipped a puck to Filip Sitar streaking down the right wing for a shot over Bowen's glove.
  • The Engineers struck again three minutes later. Rullers cleared a puck to Caleb Hadland in the neutral zone, who threw a long touch pass to Jordan Gavin streaking down the right wing. Gavin deked in front of the goal for a finish inside the right post for the 3-1 lead.
  • Ian Scherzer tacked on an empty-net goal with 42 seconds left in regulation to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Bowen made his first collegiate start, finishing the game with 23 saves.
  • Wilde's tally was his first of the season.
  • RIT ended the game with a 32-27 shot advantage.
  • The Tigers killed all four Engineer power plays, but went 0-for-4 with the extra man.
  • RIT and RPI played for the first time since playing back-to-back seasons in 2016 and 2017. The Engineers have won all six D1-era match ups dating back to the teams' first meeting in 2005.
