Women's Volleyball defeats Thiel, 3-1 and Wooster, 3-1, in Pennsylvania

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The RIT Women's Volleyball team logged two wins on the first day of the Westminster/Grove City Invitational, Friday, sweeping Thiel, 3-1 (15-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-19), and Wooster, 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23).  
 
RIT, 3, THIEL 1 (15-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-19)
  • Sophomore outside hitter Mia Gerber led the way with 13 kills, while graduate-student setter Sydney Neff contributed 36 assists, nine digs and a career-high seven service aces. Graudate-student libero Hailey Blixt also added a four-set season-high 27 digs.
  • RIT led, 5-4, in the first set, but Thiel rode a 7-1 run to a 10-5 edge. The Tigers pulled within five, 16-11, but Thiel scored eight of the next nine points to force set point and take the opener.
  • RIT trailed, 8-6, early in the second, but used an 8-4 surge, including three kills by senior outside hitter Catherine Vento, to take a 13-12 lead. The Tigers later put together a 7-2 run for a 20-15 lead, but Thiel scored four-straight points to pull back within one, 20-19. Leading 21-20 two points later, RIT closed the set with four-unanswered points to even the match.
  • Neither team led by more than two during a back-and-forth the third set before Thiel broke a 12-12 tie with a 5-1 surge for a 17-13 lead. The Tigers came back within two, 21-19, but Thiel looked to have control of the set after a 3-1 run yielded a 24-20 lead. However, RIT fought of three set points during a 6-0 run to steal a 2-1 lead.   
  • In the fourth, RIT started with an 11-7 lead before Thiel pulled back within two, 12-10. RIT used an 8-3 run to build a decisive 20-13 lead before closing the match by scoring three of the final four points.
RIT 3, WOOSTER 1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23)
  • Gerber led the way with 15 kills followed by senior outside hitter Samantha Cox with 12. Neff tallied 41 assists and 15 digs while Blixt tacked on 21 digs.
  • RIT trailed, 8-7, early in the first but built a 15-10 run with an 8-2 surge. Wooster later put together a 3-1 run to pull within four, 22-18, but a Cox kill closed a 3-1 Tiger run and the first set.
  • The Tigers led, 8-5, in the second, but Wooster rode a 7-2 run to a 12-10 lead. Wooster later broke a 16-16 tie with a 4-1 run, but RIT responded with six-consecutive points for a 23-20 lead. The Tigers had a swing at set point, but Wooster tied the match, 24-24, with back-to-back points. RIT had another set point following a Wooster service error, but Wooster scored three consecutive points to even the match, 1-1.
  • RIT trailed, 7-3, in the third and later, 14-12, before scoring six-straight points to start a 7-1 run en route to a 19-15 lead. Wooster bounced back with a 6-1 run for a 21-20 lead, but the Tigers finished the set with six-unanswered points, including a pair of Gerber kills, for a 2-1 lead.
  • Tied, 11-11, in the fourth, RIT pushed ahead by five with an 8-2 surge, before Wooster put together its own run, 6-2, to trail by one, 20-19. The Tigers scored a 4-1 run for match point, 24-20, before Wooster scored three-straight to pull back within one. Following an RIT timeout, the Tigers won on a Wooster service error to complete the victory.
