Softball takes two comeback victories over Union; 2-1, 13-12

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT softball team swept Union in a doubleheader; winning 2-1, 13-12, Saturday.

GAME ONE – RIT 2, Union 1
Senior Elise Guth finished 3-for-4 with a triple and scored a run while junior Lillian Rienstra was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI to back a four-hit complete game victory by sophomore Jessica Majot.
  • Union opened the first inning with a solo homerun by Nahnny Sobetzko over the left field fence.
  • Guth led off the fifth with a triple to left and came home after Rienstra popped out in the infield.
  • RIT scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Rienstra singled through the left side and advanced to second after junior Bailey Kehl reached on a Union fielding error. Junior Maddy Cook lined a single over second base to bring Rienstra home for the walk-off victory.
  • Majot struck out three without allowing any walks to improve to 7-5 this spring.

GAME TWO – RIT 13, Union 12
Juniors Bailey Kehl and Erin Ozminkowski both finished 3-for-4, while Cook earned a team-high 4 RBI with a three-run homer as the Tigers completed a 13-12 comeback victory after being down by 10 runs.
  • Union took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on two RBI doubles and fielder's choice and plated seven more runs in the second for a 10-0 lead.
  • The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the second as Ozminkowski and first-year Maria Minemier both scored on wild pitches, followed by an RBI single from first-year Emma Merkley that scored first-year Kathryn Baretela.
  • Minemier hit an RBI single to left field in the third and scored Kehl.
  • The Tigers tied the game with a sixth-run fourth. Rienstra knocked a two-run single before Cook later hit a three-run homer over the left field fence and Merkley drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game.
  • Union retook the lead with a run in the fifth, but sacrifice flies from Cook and Baretela in the bottom of the inning put RIT back on top, 12-11.
  • Kehl plated Merkley with a sacrifice fly in the sixth for what proved to be the game-winning run, increasing the Tigers' lead 13-11.
  • The Garnett Chargers pulled within one two outs in the top of the seventh, but Majot induced a final ground- out to seal the RIT victory
