No. 2 Men's Lacrosse beats Ursinus, 17-11

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT senior midfielder Seth Grottenthaler scored three goals to lead the No. 2 Tigers to a 17-11 win over Ursinus, Saturday.
 
Graduate student attack Jake Erickson (2g, 3a) and senior midfielder Kaden Brunson (1g, 4a) each tallied five points, while junior attack Clifford Gaston finished with two goals and two assists.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Gaston and Grottenthaler scored back-to-back goals early in the first quarter to give RIT a 2-0 lead.
  • Ursinus scored two straight goals, tying the score at 2-2 on Harry Sweitzer's goal with 10:39 remaining in the quarter.
  • Graduate student face-off specialist Allyn French scored off the draw to give RIT a 3-2 lead and Erickson made it 4-2 on his goal from Brunson with 9:46 remaining.
  • Ursinus tallied three straight goals at the end the opening quarter, taking a 5-4 lead on Brett Wilkinson's goal with 5:29 to play.
  • Pilcher scored from Gaston in the closing seconds of the opening frame to tie the game at 5-5.
  • Erickson scored off a feed from French six seconds into the second quarter to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead.
  • Drake Kasoff and Jared Laskin tallied two straight goals for the Bears, taking a 7-6 lead on Laskin's goal with 11:15 remaining in the half.
  • Grottenthaler tied the score at 7-7 on his goal off an assist from Erickson with 10:11 remaining, but Sweitzer scored with 7:47 to play in the opening half to give Ursinus an 8-7 lead.
  • First-year midfielder David Charney scored two goals, while Brunson had a goal and an assist in a five-goal RIT run to start the third quarter. Brunson tied the score at 8-8 on his goal 44 seconds into the third, while Charney scored back-to-back goals to extend the RIT lead to 12-8.
  • Sweitzer scored with 71:52 remaining in the third to break the Tiger's run and cut the deficit to 12-9.
  • Sophomore midfielder Chase Bruno scored with 1:18 to play in the third to give RIT a 13-9 lead.
  • Gaston tallied a goal and an assist in the fourth quarter, while sophomore Tyson Allison, senior Michael grace and Bruno each scored. Eddie Newman scored for Ursinus to make it a 17-11 final.
 
GAME NOTES:
  • RIT outshot Denison, 44-34.
  • The Tigers went 1-of-2 on man-up and 20-of-23 on clearing attempts.
  • Sophomore goalie Alex Zborowski made nine saves to improve to 5-0 on the season.
  • Charney and Bruno each scored two goals.
  • Pilcher scored his 154th career goal moving him into a tie for fifth place on RIT's all-time goal scoring list.
  • French won 12-of-17 face-offs and had a team-high nine ground balls.
