ROCHESTER, NY – RIT Graduate student attack
Jake Erickson tallied a goal and two assists in the No. 2 Tigers 10-9 overtime loss at No. 5 RPI in Saturday's Liberty League opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Ely Kalkstein gave RPI the lead on his goal with 12:54 remaining in the first period.
- Graduate student attack Luke Pilcher scored off an assist from Erickson to tie the game at 1-1.
- RPI scored two straight goals, taking a 3-1 lead on Tyler Ruffini's goal with 39 seconds to play in the opening quarter.
- Erickson and junior attack Clifford Gaston scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter, tying the game at 3-3 on Erickson's goal with 8:07 to play in the half.
- Gaston scored with 8:05 remaining in the third quarter to give the Tigers their first lead of the game at 4-3.
- Ruffini tied the game at 4-4 on his goal before graduate student midfielder John Mozrall scored to give RIT a 5-4 lead with 8:05 to play in the third.
- Caleb Oswari tied the game at 5-5 on his goal and senior midfielder Ian Dinga gave RIT a 6-5 lead on his goal with 6:18 to play.
- RPI scored three straight goals of the quarter, taking an 8-6 lead on Ruffini's goal with 2:29 to play.
- Senior midfielder Kaden Brunson scored with 1:02 remaining in the third to cut RPI's lead to 8-7 and again early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 8-8.
- Gradute student face-off specialist Allyn French scored on the ensuing face-off to give RIT a 9-8 lead.
- Anthony Mazzella tied the game on his goal with 8:29 remaining in the fourth quarter.
- Pilcher had his shot saved by RPI goalie, Joseph Perry with 29 seconds remaining in overtime.
- RPI cleared the ball and Erik Ojert scored with two seconds remaining in OT to give the Engineers the win.
GAME NOTES:
- RIT outshot RPI, 50-39.
- Sophomore goalie Alex Zborowski made 14 saves in net for the Tigers.
- French won 11 draws and grabbed a six ground balls.
- Senior defenseman Michael Grace led RIT with eight ground balls.
- RIT went 0-for-1 on man-up and was 23-of-24 on clearing attempts.
