Softball splits final day in Florida; defeats Westfield St, 10-2, falls to Emerson, 6-1

NAPLES, Fla. – The RIT Softball team split its final two games at the Gene Cusic Classic, Thursday, in Florida. The Tigers defeated Westfield State, 10-2 (6 inn.) before falling to Emerson, 6-1.
 
RIT 10, WESTFIELD STATE 2 (6 INN.)
  • First-year Emma Merkley went 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBI while Maria Minemier finished 2-for-for with a double, two runs scored and two RBI in the opening victory.
  • RIT scored four runs in the first inning, started by a lead-off single by senior Elise Guth followed by another single by junior Maddy Cook two batters later. Junior Erin Ozminkowski advanced both runners with an infield ground out before Minemier loaded the bases with a single. Sophmore Jessica Majot drew a walk to bring home the first run before first-year Kathryn Baretela and Merkley notched back-to-back singles to bring home the other three.
  • Westfield answered with a pair of runs in the third, but the Tigers brought five more across in the bottom of the inning to build a 9-2 lead. Ozminkowski led off with a single before Minemier brought her home with a double. Majot singled Minemier to third, before Minemier scored on an error by the catcher. Baretela advanced Majot to third with a single and later came around on a two-run single by Merkley. Merkley later came home on a Westfield error off the bat of junior Bailey Kehl for the seven-run lead.  
  • RIT closed the game in the sixth after back-to-back Westfield errors followed by an RBI ground-out by Minemier plated Cook for the eight-run lead.
  • Majot earned the complete game victory, surrendering two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out six. 
EMERSON 6, RIT 1
  • Emerson scored a run in the bottom of the first before the Tigers bounced back for a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by sophomore Marissa Giuntoli.
  • The Lions plated four runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
  • Junior Morgan Best took the complete game loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out six batters.
