SCRANTON, P.A. – The RIT baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader in their season opener on Sunday at Scranton falling, 14-13 in the first game and losing the second, 3-0.
GAME ONE – Scranton 14, RIT 13
Sophomore infielder
Charlie Slaymaker had four RBI's as the Tigers came up short against Scranton in the first game of a doubleheader.
- In the first inning, sophomore infielder Jarin Moses doubled to left field, senior utilityman John Bagley scored and gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead
- Scranton scored four runs in the first inning
- Junior infielder Randy Dodig singled in the second inning and sophomore infielder Trent Rapp scored, putting RIT within two
- Scranton scored five runs in the second inning, increasing the lead to six
- In the fifth inning, an RBI triple from junior outfielder Adam Marsh, a groundout RBI from Moses and a home run from Rapp, put the Tigers within three
- An RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, put Scranton ahead 10-6
- Sophomore pitcher Luc Rising and graduate student pitcher Eric Sipling threw two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh
- In the eighth, Slaymaker hit a three-run homer, putting the RIT back in front 11-10
- Scranton tied the game at 11 with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth
- In the ninth, senior catcher Kyle Poorman scored on a throwing error and Moses grounded out, but first-year Mikey Zacher was able to score, giving the Tigers a 13-11 lead
- An RBI double scored two Scranton players, tying the game at 13 in the bottom of the ninth. With the bases loaded, Scranton was able to score the winning run off of an RBI single
GAME TWO – Scranton 3, RIT 0 (7 inn.)
Graduate transfer pitcher
Matthew Chase allows one run in his RIT debut as the Tigers fall to Scranton in second game of doubleheader.
- Graduate student pitcher Alex Slotter started the game throwing two scoreless innings
- An RBI double gave Scranton a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third
- Zacher and Dodig each singled in the sixth, but were left on base
- Scranton scored one run in the bottom of the sixth, increasing the lead to three
- First-year infielder Ben Fitzgerald doubled in the seventh, but was left on base after one strikeout and two fly-outs
