Men's Lacrosse beats Babson, 20-9, in NCAA Third Round

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT junior Seth Grottenthaler scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Tigers to a 20-9 win over Babson in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, Sunday.
 
Sophomore Clifford Gaston scored three goals and added two assists, while senior TJ Hendricks tallied three goals. Seniors Luke Pilcher, Spencer Bell, John Mozrall and Dylan Bruno each scored a pair of goals.
 
Senior Joe Camp caused three turnovers, grabbed five ground balls and had two assists. Sophomore Carson Taylor won 12-of-20 face-offs and had seven ground balls, while graduate student goalie Will Sterrett made 11 saves to improve to 13-0 on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Sean Traynor, Grottenthaler, Gaston, Pilcher, Bell and Mozrall each scored for the Tigers in a 6-0 first quarter.
  • Babson scored back-to-back goals, cutting the RIT lead to 6-2 on Jacob Tauss' goal with 10:11 to play in the second quarter.
  • Gaston scored off an assist from Mozrall with 7:35 remaining to give the Tigers a 7-2 lead.
  • Christian Brofft scored for Babson to make the score 7-3, while Hendricks scored in transition off a feed from graduate student Taylor Jensen with 3:02 to play to give RIT an 8-3 lead.
  • Babson's Ryan Kenney scored with 2:24 to play that cut the Tigers' lead to 8-4, but Bruno scored with 1:56 remaining to give RIT a 9-4 halftime lead.
  • Brofft scored his second of the game with 12:01 to play in the third quarter to cut the RIT lead down to 9-5.
  • Bruno scored his second of the game with 10:28 remaining in the third to give the Tigers a 10-5 lead.
  • Chi Chi Price scored for Babson with 4:03 to play to make it 11-7.
  • RIT scored the final three goals of the third quarter, taking a 14-7 lead on Hendricks' goal from Camp with 33 seconds to play in the frame.
  • Topher Bower scored for Babson early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 14-8.
  • RIT scored the next six goals, extending its lead to 20-8 on first-year Ethan Harkins' goal off an assist from junior Kaden Brunson with 7:04 to play.
  • Will Spangenberg scored with 6:50 remaining to make it a 20-9 final.
 
GAME NOTES
  • RIT outshot Babson, 47-28, including 32 on net.
  • The Tigers won 19-of-31 draws and had 45 ground balls.
  • RIT advances to the quarterfinals for the 12th time since 2010.

RIT will play Middlebury in the quarterfinals on Saturday (May 20) at 5:00 p.m. Host Tufts will also square off with Lynchburg at 2:00 p.m. with the winners advancing to Sunday's national semifinal game at 5:00 p.m.
