Baseball splits with Rochester; will host crossover series next week

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Rochester on Saturday, losing game one, 5-2, before winning game two, 7-6.

The results mean that RIT have clinched second in the Liberty League West division and will host the third-seeded team from the Liberty League East next week in a crossover series for a spot in the Liberty League tournament.

GAME 1- Rochester 5, RIT 2
The Tigers were unable to make up an early deficit in game one
  • The Yellowjackets jumped to an early 5-0 lead with three runs in the first and two in the second.
  • Senior catcher Kyle Poorman got the Tigers on the board with a single up the middle in the second inning, scoring first-year second baseman Jarin Moses to make it 5-1.
  • First-year third baseman Charlie Slaymaker added another run in the fourth for RIT with a single up the middle to narrow Rochester's lead to 5-2.
  • The Tigers were unable to make up the rest of the deficit and took the 5-2 loss.
  • Senior pitcher Peter Bossinas threw two innings of scoreless relief.
GAME 2- RIT 7, Rochester 6
  • Rochester again took an early lead, as Joseph Rende singled home a run for the 1-0 score in the first.
  • The Yellowjackets got two more runs on an error in the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0.
  • RIT got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the third, as senior left fielder Chris Reilly singled home graduate student right fielder Ian Libby to make the score 3-1.
  • The next batter, Moses, then homered to left center fielder to score Reilly and himself and tie the game at 3-3. The homer was his sixth of the season.
  • The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, as junior shortstop Randy Dodig doubled to left to score two and RIT the 5-3 lead.
  • Libby then hit his second home run of the season, scoring Dodig and himself to extend the lead to 7-3.
  • The Yellowjackets staged a late comeback, as Jacob Matzat hit a bases-loaded double to score three runs and narrow the lead to 7-6.
  • Graduate student Eric Sipling got the next two hitters out to secure the victory.
  • Senior pitcher Alex Slotter started the game and went five innings, allowing one earned run while striking out seven.

The Tigers host the third-seeded team from the Liberty League East in a crossover series next weekend. Times and opponent have not yet been fully formalized.
