Men's Hockey falls 4-3 at St. Lawrence in season-opener

CANTON, N.Y. – The RIT men's hockey team opened the 2023-24 campaign with a 4-3 setback at St. Lawrence, Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After St. Lawrence scored 1:54 into the contest for the lone goal of the first period, first-year forward Tyler Fukakusa evened the score at 18:37 of the second period with his first tally in a Tiger sweater.
  • The Saints scored twice in the first nine minutes of the third period to retake a 3-1 lead with 11:25 on the clock.
  • RIT senior defenseman Aiden Hansen-Bukata found the net 28 second later to cut the lead back to one, but St. Lawrence took advantage of a Tiger hooking call at 10:19 with a power-play tally at 10:48 for a 4-2 edge.
  • Junior forward Carter Wilkie scored an unassisted tally at 13:12, but RIT couldn't fine the equalizer down the stretch. 
GAME NOTES
  • RIT killed five of St. Lawrence's six power play opportunities while finishing 0-for-3 with the extra man.
  • Junior goaltender Tommy Scarfone was credited with 30 saves, including 12 in the third period, as the Saints finished with a 34-29 shot advantage.
  • Sophomore defenseman Gustav Blom assisted Fukakusa's tally for his first collegiate point.
  • Junior forward Tanner Andrew was credited with an assist on Hansen-Bukata's tally. 
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT hosts Guelph (Ont.) on Monday (Oct. 9) in a 5:05 p.m. exhibition game before welcoming Notre Dame to town next Saturday (Oct. 14) at 7:05 p.m. The game will be played in downtown Rochester at Blue Cross Arena as part of Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend.
