RIT beats St. Lawrence 13-5 to win 10th straight Liberty League title

ROCHESTER, NY – The top-seeded RIT (17-1) men's lacrosse team won its 10th straight Liberty League Championship with a 13-5 win over third-seed St. Lawrence (13-4) in Saturday's title game.
 
Senior long-stick midfielder Taylor Jensen caused three turnovers and grabbed four ground balls, Saturday and had a caused turnover, five ground balls and had an assist in the semifinals against RPI to earn the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. Lawrence's Judge Murphy gave the Saints a 1-0 lead on his goal early in the first quarter.
  • Teammate Ben Murtagh gave St. Lawrence a 2-0 lead on his goal with 12:28 remaining in the quarter.
  • RIT senior Spencer Bell scored off an assist from sophomore Caleb Commandant that pulled the Tigers to within a goal.
  • Junior Luke Pilcher tied the game at 2-2 on his goal off an assist from senior Quinn Commandant.
  • Sophomore John Mozrall gave the Tigers their first lead of the game on his goal with 4:10 remaining in the first.
  • Will Phinney scored off an assist from Chris Jordan that tied the score at 3-3.
  • Chris Jordan gave St. Lawrence a 4-3 lead on his goal with 2:13 to play.
  • Senior Ryan Barnable scored with 18 seconds remaining in the opening quarter off an assist from Mozrall that tied the game at 4-4.
  • Barnable scored the lone goal of the second quarter, giving the Tigers a 5-4 lead on his goal with 6:58 to play in the half.
  • RIT's defense held St. Lawrence scoreless in the second quarter, including killing off a 6-on-4 man-up by the Saints.
  • Senior goalie Drew Hutchison made six saves in the second quarter.
  • Senior Marley Angus and freshman Clifford Gaston each scored for RIT to begin the third quarter.
  • Gaston scored off an assist from sophomore Seth Grottenthaler that extended the Tigers lead to 7-4.
  • St. Lawrence's Ben Hutchinson cut the RIT lead to 7-5 on his goal with 6:07 to play in the third.
  • Commandant and Pilcher each scored late in the third to give the Tigers a 9-5 lead.
  • Pilcher scored twice, while Gaston and junior Dylan Bruno each scored for RIT in the fourth quarter.
  • The Tigers defense held the Saints scoreless in the final quarter, forcing St. Lawrence into three turnovers.
 
GAME NOTES
  • RIT fired 51 shots, including 28 on target.
  • RIT finished 26-of-27 on clearing attempts, won 13-of-22 draws and had 42 ground balls.
  • Pilcher led RIT with four goals and five points.
  • Barnable and Gaston each scored two goals, while Commandant finished with three points.
  • Mozrall and Angus each finished with a goal and an assist.
  • Graduate student Jimmy Spillane won 12 draws and had eight ground balls.
  • Hutchison finished with 13 saves to improve to 17-1 on the season.
  • St. Lawrence goalie William Helm finished with 15 saves.
  • RIT earns the automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament for the twelfth straight season.
