Baseball season ends in Liberty League Tournament with 7-6 loss to Clarkson

ITHACA, N.Y. - The RIT baseball team fell to Clarkson, 7-6, in the Tigers' season-ending second loss of the double elimination Liberty League Championship Tournament, Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Clarkson took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Mike Nee brought home the opening run with a single, and then Tommy Bianchi hit a two-run single.
  • Senior third baseman Patrick Blackall got the Tigers on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 game.
  • The Golden Knights added single runs scored by Joe Pagano and Kent Wilson in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead.
  • The Tigers scored five runs in the seventh inning for a 6-5 lead. Graduate student right fielder Nic Stagnitta hit a three-run homer to get RIT within a run at 5-4, scoring senior left fielder Chris Reilly and freshman designated hitter Adam Marsh. Senior centerfielder Will Porter's triple scored sophomore shortstop Randy Dodig to tie the game, and then sophomore second baseman John Bagley brought Porter home for RIT's first lead of the contest with a double.
  • Clarkson tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth inning after Cam Jerrett's sacrifice fly scored Bianchi.
  • The Golden Knights got the winning run after Nee was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the top of the ninth.
GAME NOTES
  • The Tigers finished with eight hits from different batters. Home runs came from Stagnitta and Blackall, Porter tripled, Bagley doubled, and solo hits came from Reilly, Marsh, Dodig and junior catcher Kyle Poorman.
  • Of the Tigers' six RBI, three went to Stagnitta. Bagley, Blackall and Porter had the other three.
  • Senior pitcher Liam Barry took the loss after allowing two hits and one earned run in one inning of work after relieving senior starting pitcher Jon Opalewski, who went seven innings and allowed nine hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts.
  • Senior pitcher Matt Vitro and graduate student pitcher Collin Reformat split the ninth inning. Vitro record one out and Reformat two.
  • RIT was eliminated from the Liberty League Tournament after registering the team's second loss against Clarkson, after a tournament-opening, 7-5, grand slam walk-off loss to Rochester the previous day.
