Women's Volleyball falls at Ithaca, 3-0, in Liberty League Semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y. – RIT sophomore outside hitter Liv Benard totaled a team-high nine kills in the Tigers' 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-13) loss at Ithaca in the Liberty League Tournament Semifinals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • RIT used an early 7-1 run in the first set to build a 9-4 lead. Ithaca battled back to pull within one, 13-12, but the Tigers responded with a 5-2 surge for an 18-14 lead. The Bombers won the next five points to take a 19-18 lead and led, 21-20, before RIT scored three-straight points for a 23-21 lead. Ithaca re-tied the score, 23-23, before a kill by sophomore middle blocker Cat Vento gave the Tigers a set point, 24-23. Ithaca retied the score with a kill before two RIT attack errors gave Ithaca the first set.
  • Neither team led by more than two points the entire second set that featured 14 ties. RIT led, 19-17, before Ithaca scored two points to retie the score. The Tigers made it 20-19, but three straight points yielded a 22-20 edge for the Bombers. Ithaca had a pair of set points at 24-22, but back-to-back kills by Benard and sophomore outside hitter Samantha Cox knotted the score, 24-24. Ithaca scored the final two points to take a two-set lead.
  • Ithaca built an early 6-2 lead in the third before later riding a 7-0 run to a 13-3 lead. RIT scored two points to pull back within eight, 14-6, but never got closer than nine points the rest of the set as Ithaca completed the shutout. 
MATCH NOTES
  • Junor setter Sydney Neff compiled 28 assists and eight digs.
  • Junior libero Hailey Blixt had a team-high 12 digs
  • Vento had five kills along with three solo blocks.
  • Grad student middle blocker Calista Gasper added six kills on .308 hitting while senior middle blocker Emelia Mislan added five kills on .364 attacking. 
RIT finished the season with a 16-17 record, including a 5-3 Liberty League mark during the regular season. Seeded fourth for the conference tournament, the Tigers qualified for their fourth-consecutive Liberty League Semifinal appearance after defeating fifth-seeded Vassar, 3-0, in the quarterfinals.
