Baseball splits at Clarkson; wins 4-1, falls, 6-3

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The RIT baseball team closed the 2021 campaign with a road split against Clarkson, Sunday, winning the opener, 4-1, before falling, 6-3.
 
GAME 1 – RIT 4, Clarkson 1
  • Chris Reilly (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) went 2-for-4, including a lead-off, fourth-inning homerun, while Colin Reformat only allowed six hits and struck out four to earn the complete-game victory.
  • The Tigers struck first with a run in the third on a two-out RBI hit by Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey).
  • Clarkson responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Tigers re-took a 3-1 lead during the decisive fourth. Reilly got things started with a shot over the left field fence before Randy Dodig (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) later brought Nick Stagnitta home with a two-out single.
  • Reformat was un-scored upon the rest of the way while Ian Libby (Melrose, MA/Malden Catholic) knocked an RBI hit in the seventh to put the game out of reach. 
GAME 2 – Clarkson 6, RIT 3
  • Libby finished 2-for-4 with a homerun while Vertoske also smacked a homerun in game-two, but the host Golden Knights overcame an early 3-0 deficit with a four-run fourth inning en route to the split.
  • Vertoske led off the second with a shot over the left-field fence before Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) later brought home Will Porter (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) with a two-out hit to stake the Tigers to the early 2-0 lead.
  • Libby led off the second with a shot to right-center for a 3-0 RIT lead, but Clarkson responded with four runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, including a two-run, two-out hit by M Tito.
  • Clarkson tacked on runs in the seventh and the eighth while reliever Jake Phillips held the Tigers to two hits and struck out eight over the final six innings to earn the win.
